How to build an opted-in email list from Instagram DMs
Your followers belong to the platform; your list belongs to you. Here is how to build a clean, opted-in email list through DM conversations.

Why you need your own list
Your reach on social media depends on the algorithm: one day a post reaches thousands, the next only a few hundred. An email list is the most durable way to reach your audience directly. DM conversations let you grow it naturally, at the moment a follower is already interested.
Offer something valuable first
People share their email address when they get something in return. Prepare an offer your audience genuinely wants:
- A free guide, checklist or template
- A discount code for the first purchase
- A waitlist or early access to a launch
- A free mini course or email series
Set up the DM flow
- Announce the offer in a post and name the keyword (“Comment GUIDE”).
- Send everyone who comments the keyword a DM that briefly explains the offer.
- Ask for the email address and say clearly what you will use it for.
- Validate the format; if it isn’t valid, ask the person to type it again.
- Once you have the address, send the promised content right away.
Consent: the foundation of the list
To send marketing emails, you need the person’s clear consent. Ask for it with a separate, plain question such as “Would you like to hear about our offers by email?”, and record when and with what wording it was given.
Keep the list clean
- Tag contacts by the campaign they came from.
- Filter out invalid addresses inside the flow.
- Include an unsubscribe link in every email.
- Use the collected data only for the purpose you were given consent for.
Move the list into your tools
Download the collected addresses as CSV for your email tool, or send them to your own systems with the API. See our integrations page for details.
