How to set up comment-to-DM automation on Instagram
Your followers comment a word, and the link or code lands in their DMs within seconds. Here is the setup, step by step.

Why comment-to-DM works
Everyone who comments “price”, “link” or “want” under a post is curious right now. The faster the answer arrives, the warmer that interest stays. Comment-to-DM automation sends a personal message to everyone who comments your keyword, within seconds, so you never answer a comment by hand.
It also removes the drop-off of “the link is in my bio”: followers see the link they asked for right in their messages. More comments also add to your post’s engagement.
Before you start
- Your Instagram account must be a professional (business or creator) account.
- In your message settings, allow connected apps to access your messages.
- Prepare what you want to send: a product link, a discount code, a guide or a sign-up form.
Step-by-step setup
- Connect your Instagram account and create a new automation.
- Choose “post or Reel comment” as the trigger, and link the automation to one post or to all of them.
- Enter the keyword. Pick a short word and ignore upper and lower case.
- Optionally add a short public reply to the comment, such as “Check your DMs!”.
- Write the DM and add the link as a button.
- Publish the automation and test it by commenting from a second account.
How to choose a good keyword
- Keep it short: one word, ideally 4–8 letters.
- Make it fit the post: “RECIPE” for a recipe, “SALE” for a campaign.
- Avoid everyday words: “yes” or “nice” trigger it by accident.
- Allow for typos: add the common variations too.
Writing your DM
The first message should be short, warm and focused on a single action. Use the person’s name, give them what they asked for right away and add one button. Long paragraphs and several links lower the click rate.
| Element | Our advice |
|---|---|
| Greeting | One sentence, with their name |
| Content | The link or code they asked for, with a line of context |
| Action | One button: “See the product”, “Open the guide” |
| Follow-up | Optional: ask for an email or a follow |
Meta’s rules
Instagram allows one private reply per comment, sent within 7 days of the comment. When the follower replies to your message, the conversation continues as usual. Rules can change, so follow Meta’s developer documentation for the current details.
Common mistakes
- Not mentioning the keyword in the post, so followers don’t know what to write.
- Publishing the automation without testing it.
- Sending long text instead of a link.
- Linking the same automation to unrelated posts.
